Resenting Hong Kong Series:
Resenting My Own History

PAK Sheung Chuen

“Hong Kong people have a general resentment towards their history. Sadly, today will become another day in history that will evoke resentment in the future.” 2006-12-14

17 years have passed since Hong Kong's handover to mainland China. However, colonial era one-dollar coins with the British queen's profile imprinted on them can still be found in circulation occasionally. We collect a British Queen one-dollar coin from each of the participants through the Internet, roadside booths and workshops. Each of the coins collected are passed to a British person, who is invited to brutally scrape the Queen's face against the ground of Britain. The profile of the Queen vanishes in a low profile way. Instead, it draws a long scar imprint on the ground. This is reminiscent of the 150-year history of colonialism and its imprint on Hong Kong. The two sides of the coins used to connect Hong Kong citizens to the British. Now, they will finally be separated forever. The surfaces of the scraped coins combine to form a round mirror, reflecting the viewers' faces.

This artpiece has its roots all the way back in the 2006 local activist movement calling for preservation of the Star Ferry Pier and Queens' Pier in Hong Kong, where the post-colonial HKSAR government's intention to erase traces of colonialism prompted Hong Kong citizens to reflect upon their identities. At that time, I took a British Queen one-dollar coin from my purse and brutally scraped it against the ground. The entire process of the Queen's face vanishing from this Hong Kong coin was published on a newspaper.
